In July, this year, Gerry Lopez came to Ericeira for the European premiere of a biographical documentary starring himself.
Between the afternoon press conference and the nightly screening of the film about Mr. Pipeline, the question arose as to whether this iconic surfer had previously passed through the village of sea urchins, existing records that prove his visit on at least another occasion, more than two decades ago.
a super friendly and kind person
Surfer Rodrigo Neves, better known locally as Kauai (the name of his board brand – he has been a shaper since 1990) recalls this event with some words and two images.
His meeting with the Hawaiian surfer took place in the late 90s and Rodrigo Neves remembers “a super friendly and kind person, who immediately made himself available to take pictures and sign autographs, even when he was with his friends on the beach”.
Not knowing exactly what brought Mr. Pipeline to Ericeira this time, ‘Kauai’ recalls that they were “talking about boards and I told him that I am a shaper and that my brand has the name of a Hawaiian island and he found it very interesting.”
In order to establish a bridge between this episode and the most recent passage of the surfing symbol, we also asked Rodrigo Neves – he was present at the film screening, but this time he did not have the opportunity to speak with the iconic figure in Waves History – which is his appreciation on the documentary “The Yin & Yang of Gerry Lopez”, directed by Stacy Peralta:
“I thought the film was very well done, it talks about all stages of Gerry Lopez’s life, in a very objective way, it’s not just surfing but an overview of his life. Very good.”
