Video of the Week #19

At a time that surf is a global trend, the sport and some of its lovers are looking to reinvent the concept. They travel to inhospitable places, like the Artic; take surfing to static waves; and search for new ways of riding the waves, using odd objects or recreating the boards with different materials.

“Float the Boat” is the experience of surfing with a heavy, wooden board – around 10kg heavier than the usual board – designed by Nick Uricchio, co-founder and shaper of Semente, and tested by Gony Zubizarreta, Argentinian surfer presently living in Ericeira.

The trial is in Coxos on a day of good waves, perfect to check the performance of Nick Uricchio’s masterpiece before he hangs it on his living room wall. The result, they say, was positive and it won’t be a surprise if we see more of these board in the water in the future. It’s the search for evolution.
