On May 9, Europe Day was celebrated and the National Palace of Mafra was one of the stages for this celebration. The monument, which is part of Unesco’s World Heritage Site, held a concert recorded and streamed online.
The European Union Youth Orchestra (EUYO) performed at the Palace Library, with three Portuguese musicians. The celebration in Germany, also held in one of the most important palaces in Europe, the Palais Lichtenau, in Potsdam, also had the participation of three other musicians of Portuguese nationality – these six young people are members or alumni of EUYO.
The first celebrations of the date on which the Schuman Declaration was signed, at the initiative of Luxembourgish Robert Schuman, in 1950, were in 1986. It was this declaration that gave rise to the European Union, currently composed of 28 Member States.
