The Allianz ASP World Junior brought back to Ericeira the worldly renowned international surfing competitions. The world’s best under-20 surfers battled for the Junior’s World Title – in female and male categories – for five days on unceasing perfect conditions in Ribeira d’Ilhas. An intense dispute under an October that felt like Summer – lots of Sun and the water temperature surpassing the 20 Celsius degrees.
The championship will be remembered for many years not only for the excellent conditions, but for the first surfing world title for Portugal: Vasco Ribeiro won the competition and climbed to the top of the podium after a Portuguese-speaking final between the Portuguese and the Brazilian Italo Ferreira. It was the closure of a golden year for Vasco as the Junior’s World Title sits next to his National Title and Junior’s European title, both conquered in 2014.
But Vasco Ribeiro wasn’t the only Portuguese in the podium: local surfer Tomás Fernandes made its way to a 3rd place; and Teresa Bonvalot, in women’s category, made it as far as a 5th place.
In roughly three minutes, the video sums up the competition that will be in the Portuguese surfing history and captures the vivid environment of Ericeira’s iconic beach during a competition that has put the village in the centre of the surfing world.
