In December last year, an Ericeira resident created a Petition asking the responsible entities to promote more green spaces in Ericeira.

Available online, this petition created by Marina Martins aims to “benefit our village, the environment and residents’ quality of life”, in the words of its promoter.

petition draws on conclusions from the study on the impact of the Ericeira World Surfing Reserve

After describing the benefits that green spaces bring to populations, the petition focuses on the specific case of Ericeira:

In the second last paragraph of the respective text it can be read that “According to the recent study on the assessment of the impact of the Ericeira World Surfing Reserve (EWSR) in the last decade, the economic growth that surfing brought, with the increase in the number of tourists, urban pressure and traffic increased and the EWSR did not have a positive effect on the quality of life of the residents”, since green spaces did not increase at the same rate. Likewise, the growing national and, especially, international tourist publicity for Ericeira, despite the benefits it may bring to its growth, has greatly aggravated the aforementioned problem.”

The petition in question intends to alert to this problem, thus giving civil society a contribution to its resolution or, at least, mitigation, as can be read in the following conclusion:

“Thus, the intention of this petition is to appeal to the responsible entities to intervene in order to create more green spaces in Ericeira, allowing for a more balanced planning of the territory and, this way, contributing to the reduction of the environmental impact of human activity as well and to improve the quality of life of its population.”

Questioned by AZUL, Marina Martins said that they would like to reach as many signatures as possible in order to deliver the petition to the Parish Council of Ericeira and the Municipality of Mafra.

It’s important to recall that, on January 6 this year, the Municipality of Mafra announced the creation of Ericeira’s Urban Green Park. In this regard, Marina Martins considers that the aforementioned petition remains valid, since “the creation of green spaces, in addition to the obvious advantages in terms of the environment and public health, takes away room for unbridled works.”
