Accessibility and inclusion are key words. It is based on these principles that the Directorate-General for Cultural Heritage (DGPC) announced an initiative aimed at making some of the most important Portuguese monuments accessible to all.
From now on, visitors to the Convent of Christ, Alcobaça Monastery, Batalha Monastery, Mafra National Palace, monuments classified as World Heritage, and the Machado de Castro National Museum, in Coimbra, will have volumetric models of the buildings and replicas of constructive and decorative details. These models and replicas can be touched, allowing a better apprehension and understanding of the historical heritage.

According to the DGPC, this project is part of a broader initiative of “Accessible and Inclusive Communication”, supported by Turismo de Portugal, through an application to the “ Programa Valorizar” (To Value). This program is a support line for Accessible Tourism – All for All and has an investment of around 159,000 euros.
The DGPC intends to extend the project to all the museums, monuments and palaces that are assigned to it. The intention is to provide all visitors with an enriching and inclusive experience, in order to promote equal access to cultural and historical heritage.
