The Municipality of Mafra announced this week the creation of the Ecological Park of the World Surfing Reserve of Ericeira, the first step having been the acquisition of a large green area at the “heart” of the Reserve.

The land acquired by the municipality has an area of nearly 150,000 m2, extending from Empa Beach to Mil Regos Fort, encompassing two of the waves of the World Surfing Reserve – Pedra Branca and Reef – as well as other high quality waves, such as Backdoor.

The Municipality of Mafra announced in a press release that its goal is to contribute “to the preservation of this coastal strip, unique due to the quality of the waves, but also due to its environmental richness” – the elements that led to its nomination as World Surfing Reserve.

It is also the intention of the municipality to reconcile the nature conservancy withthe creation of a new hub in the north of Ericeira, intended as a leisure area for residents and visitors, thus strengthening its tourist attractiveness.

Earlier this month the Interpretation Center of the World Surfing Reserve of Ericeira was opened. It is a good place to increase the knowledge on the nearly 4 kilometers of coastline recognized by the Save The Waves Coalition in October 2011.
