Hercules, the son of Zeus, father of the gods and men, and Alcmena, a mortal, is a figure in greek mythology that represents the strength and struggle of man against the forces of nature. This status was given to him through the twelve labours that he found obliged to perform in order to reinstate his honor, after assassinating his wife and six children, and to become immortal.
This is a brief way to describe Hercules’ fate, as brief as his passage through the portuguese coast as a natural phenomenon that left visible marks in the structures near the sea.
Ericeira, town of people who celebrate the sea for its beauty and virtues, didn’t escape the unrestrained fury of the atlantic waves that stepped into walls and piers and which remined us of our small human presence against the baffling maritime strength. The townsfolk will have more than twelve labours to recover from the damages done, but in the memory will also remaine the rare spectacle of the presence of such strength by this mythological storm that edged the Ericeira shoreline.
