Katie Storey, born in the United States of America, is the founder of the interior design studio Storey Design, viewing spaces as more than just places to rest your head or take care of your family. Maintaining clients in her home country, she has been developing her business in Portugal – from Ericeira. In this conversation, we learned more about her journey, concept, and vision, always focused on people and sustainability. And, by the way, are you familiar with the Good Future Design Alliance?
What is your pre-Design background?
I worked in sustainable finance in New York.
When and in what context did you become interested in Design and realized that this area would be your professional future?
Since I began walking, I was always plotting how to create more space, carve better lines, and clear shorter pathways in every room I entered. It was only when I turned thirty that I got up the courage to actually make a business out of it!
for me, Ericeira is the ideal place
How would you define your concept and style of Design?
To me, spaces are more than just a place where you lay your head or care for your family. They have the power to engage your curiosity, to help you take deeper breaths, and to replenish you again after a tough day. I always see that potential and I want to help people create what they need.
Why did you move to Portugal and, more specifically, to Ericeira, in 2024?
I’ve always wanted to live in Europe. For me, Ericeira is the ideal place. Its proximity to Lisbon means I can easily access culture, travel and innovation but still live my daily life in connection to the things I value – beauty, nature and holistic living.
What are the reasons for wanting to do Interior Design and Remodeling simultaneously in Portugal and the USA?
I have clients that I’ve worked with for years in the US, and they are like family. But, I see a lot of creativity and growth right now in Portugal. I’m inspired to connect with clients, and craftspeople, who want to collaborate together. Also, I speak Portuguese so I can help bridge a gap that might otherwise be intimidating.
Can you list three reasons why someone would hire your services?
1. With every project, I lead from ideation to implementation, encouraging honesty and transparency every step of the way.
2. I guide the vision from start to finish and ensure each project is on schedule and within budget.
3. To me, every new project is an opportunity to create a space that tells YOUR story and helps PEOPLE live better.
my aesthetic combines a diverse sense of color and texture, while maintaining a focus on sustainability and durability
What added value can you bring to your clients’ homes?
I am strongly influenced by the many cities around the globe I’ve called home and my aesthetic combines a diverse sense of color and texture, while maintaining a focus on sustainability and durability.
To finish, tell us a little about the Good Future Design Alliance
I founded the Good Future Design Alliance in 2020 to help bring awareness to the waste created in the design and construction industry. It’s an alliance of design and build professionals committed to reducing waste in the industry. I am committed to transforming the design + build industry into one that creates beautiful, durable spaces with less impact on the planet.
