The Sea Urchin International Festival returns to Ericeira for the third edition between March 31 and April 9. During these days you can taste the typical delicacy, in a gastronomic show that includes a wide range of local restaurants, and enjoy other initiatives: conferences, tastings and showcooking.

Legend has it that the name “Ericeira” comes from the archaic term “Ouriceira”, due to the amount of echinoderms that inhabited the beaches of this coastal area. Now, the festival challenges local restaurants to introduce sea urchins to their menus (whether reinvented or traditional, sophisticated or simple – it may even be left on natural, when the sea flavor stands out) and consumers to embark on a journey through the sense of taste.

The Sea Urchin Festival, promoted by the City Council of Mafra, has a strong gastronomic aspect, but it also has a cultural aspect. As of April 1, Jaime Lobo e Silva Culture House is the place chosen for conferences, with several activities focused on the value of the sea urchin as well as on its contribution to the promotion of tourism and scientific research projects.
