Portugal is currently the most popular country on the internet when the search topic is “surf”. It has even strengthened its global leadership, according to a study conducted by Bloom Consulting, a company specialized in brand strategies for destinations.
According to the general manager of the company in Portugal, Filipe Roquette, “with a huge attraction of online annual searches, Portugal reinforces its position of world leader as the most popular destination online searches on topics regarding surf.”
The research carried out by Bloom Consulting, through its Digital Demand © tool (an algorithm that measures all the online searches on countries, regions and cities), also focused on some Portuguese destinations of reference, concluded that “The search for surfing in the 308 Portuguese municipalities was the topic with the highest growth last year (98.8%) “, with predominance of the French, British, German and Spanish markets.
This study also reveals that Nazaré is the most popular surf destination in Portugal (28% of surf searches in 308 Portuguese municipalities) and that the world’s most famous underwater canyon is also the one with the highest weight of surfing on total searches. Peniche, on the other hand, is the one that concentrates the largest number of searches for schools, surf lessons and board rentals.
Although other destinations are beginning to show some weight and more rapid growth, such as Cuba, Japan and Sri Lanka, the number of searches for these countries is much lower than the one registered by Portugal.
