perfect villages to enjoy a quiet and picturesque environment, full of history

Aldeia da Mata Pequena, in the heart of the Penedo do Lexim Special Protection Area, in the Municipality of Mafra, is characterized by being a rural village with whitewashed walls and stone paving, with very few houses, all of them rustic and humble. Ana and Diogo Batalha were responsible for the restoration and preservation of this example of Traditional Architecture from the region. Between hills and valleys, the village has some accommodation options and trails for hiking or cycling.

The village built by José Franco in Sobreiro, halfway between Ericeira and Mafra, is a place with a lot of history and one of the most recognized musealized villages in Portugal. In 1920, the potter José Franco was born: he decided to recreate an ethnographic village here, crystallizing his childhood memories through the old workshops, shops and common spaces, decorated with real objects, where local customs are reproduced. In the village there is also a museum with replicas, on a human scale, of castle walls, windmills and a cellar where you can taste wines and the region’s famous chorizo bread.
