Mafra was the first Portuguese municipality to prepare a Voluntary Local Review (VLR), within the scope of the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals – SDG. This strategic document was unanimously approved by the Municipal Assembly, in a session held on the 19th of April. In this context, the municipality was invited to present the respective VLR at the United Nations master event, the High Level Political Forum, which will take place next July in New York.
The purpose of the VLR is to assess and present the progress made in implementing the 2030 Agenda and in fulfilling the 17 SDGs, including the current state of sustainability of the Municipality of Mafra.
the VLR should support local decision-makers and encourage civil society involvement
Alongside the monitoring of local action, “the ambition is for the VLR to be an instrument both to support local decision-makers in decision-making processes, providing a cognitive tool to facilitate internal and external dialogue, and also to motivate the involvement of the civil society”, declared the Mayor of Mafra, Hélder Sousa Silva.
It should be noted that the Municipality of Mafra assumed the commitment to implement the SDGs on the Municipality Day, in May last year, by formalizing the collaboration with UN-Habitat – United Nations Human Settlements Programme. A few months later, in September 2022, Mafra was the first Portuguese and European Municipality awarded the Silver Certification, in an expression of recognition of the work carried out in adopting the SDGs as a path to follow.
