Mafra is part of the list of eight Portuguese regions and local authorities chosen, out of a total of 118 at European Union (EU) level, to implement projects to adapt to climate change.
These plans are intended to help in the fight against climate change, supporting the European Climate Pact and the EU Strategy for Adaptation to Climate Change, of which eight Portuguese regions and localities are part of the respective implementation list: Cascais, Cávado, Coimbra region, Fundão, Lisbon Metropolitan Area, Mafra, Médio Tejo and Vila Pouca de Aguiar.
from deadly heat waves and devastating droughts to wildfires and shorelines eroded by rising sea levels
The European Commission considers that “from deadly heat waves and devastating droughts to wildfires and shorelines eroded by rising sea levels, climate change is already taking its toll in Europe and this affects not only the environment and the economy, but also the health of Europeans. The frequency and severity of weather and extreme weather events are increasing, so we need to accelerate solutions that increase climate resilience”
This recently announced project is therefore expected to support at least 150 regions and communities in accelerating their transformation to climate resilience by 2030, helping local authorities to understand, prepare for and manage climate risks, as well as develop innovative solutions.
In addition to the 118 regions and local authorities, 17 private companies, service centres, research networks and local action groups active in improving climate resilience are also involved in this initiative, which will also subscribe to the project to support it.
