Mafra Palace at the top of the places that keep the best historical secrets

Recently, the Regional Tourism Authority of the Lisbon Region (ERT-RL) featured five monuments and buildings in the Lisbon Region that keep the best historical secrets. The National Palace of Mafra is among these suggestions, as an ideal place to visit with family.

Among the features of the ERT-RL were also Moinho da Maré da Mourisca (Setúbal), Moinho da Maré in Corroios (Seixal), Chalet da Condessa de Edla (Sintra) and the National Palace of Queluz (Queluz).

Mafra symbol from 1717 is characterised by the baroque style.

The Mafra symbol is characterised by the Baroque style, with Roman and Germanic influences, and the respective construction work began in 1717, on the initiative of King João V.

On the 7th of July 2019, the Royal Building of Mafra (complex comprising the Palace, Basilica, Convent, Jardim do Cerco and Tapada) was included in the UNESCO World Heritage list.

The Palace, Library and Basilica of this monument, which inspired the book “O Memorial do Convento”, by the renowned Portuguese writer José Saramago, are open to the public for visits.
