Erika Susperregui, 29, and Jokin Argote, 30, are the raddest couple one can meet. Besides being super nice, speak Spanish and Basque and having the appearance of someone who knows how to live, they surf during the year, photograph for the pleasure of sharing photos with people and, in Erika’s case, create vintage clothes and accessories with used materials.

The couple from Basque Country – she from San Sebastian, him from Zarautz, where they live – was at the museum-like store MAGIC QUIVER last Saturday with the project Follow the Vane – a little exhibition of photos and some of Erika’s creations – from women bags to coultiers and clothing.

We took a chance for a chit-chat with Erika Susperregui about the project’s coming through Ericeira.

What brings you to Ericeira?

We’re just doing a tour. We started in Spain, in the east, with a longboard festival, with a little expo and market there, where we were part of a contest too. So then we went to south of Spain and we started going up, back home, doing whole Portugal. So I know Rui [Ribeiro, owner of MAGIC QUIVER] from my last project, so I just called him and proposed doing something at the store.

How’s Ericeira treating you?

We just arrived here this morning, it is my first time here, it is pretty good, because Rui [Ribeiro] is a really nice guy and we’ve been in Peniche for the last two days and we were in Sagres before. I think Portugal is so nice, the food is so good, the people are very nice and we are pretty happy.

How long have you been doing Follow the Vane?

The blog started nearly four years ago. We started with photos because we needed to share all of them, we thought they were cool and they were in the computer and we were like, ‘Yeah, we’re going to do a blog’. And Jokin was like, ‘Yeah, why not? Just share them’. And then there was so many people liking them that we kept on doing it and when I finished my last project in December, Sew n’ Sing, I needed a bit of time, I went to Australia around January this year and started thinking about doing something special again.

What do you think of MAGIC QUIVER?

I think it is a very cool store. I think the concept is very cool. There’s not many people whom appreciate this. Well there is in the world, but Portugal and Spain have a smaller surfing culture to appreciate stuff like this. But I think it’s very cool, everything he has is very nice, everything he’s done was with care, so it’s very special.

Are you going to surf around?

Yes, for sure. Not today, because we arrived and we had to setup everything and I know I have to be here until the end but I know that tomorrow we’ll be surfing for sure.

But there’s some good wave in Ribeira d’Ilhas…

[Covering her ears] I don’t want to hear that. Hoy está fatal! [Today is woeful!].

Where are you going after this?

Keep going north. I don’t know where. Galicia, then Asturias, then we stop at home, in Zarautz, for a bit, just to leave some stuff and then I think some friends from Asturias will come with us to France.
