The National Association for Nature Conservation Quercus awarded seven beaches along the coastline of Mafra’s Municipality with the “Gold Quality Beach” distinction.
For the 2026 bathing season, Quercus has given 434 beaches across Portugal this gold status. In Mafra, the beaches Algodio/Norte, Baleia/Sul, Coxos, Foz do Lizandro – Mar, Porto da Calada, Ribeira d’Ilhas, and São Lourenço are on the list.

The assessment is based on official public information and exclusive analyses carried out in the laboratories of the Regional Hydrographic Administrations. This means excellent water quality, certain bacteria values below the set limits and no incidents, warnings against bathing, bathing prohibitions, or temporary beach closures.
The recognition highlights Mafra’s Atlantic coastline, shaped by nature, World Surfing Reserve and the coastal landscape, as one of the region’s key natural assets, alongside ongoing efforts in bathing safety and environmental protection.
