Every Summer in Ericeira has a highlight: the Festas em Honra de Nossa Senhora da Boa Viagem (Festivities in Honour of Nossa Senhora da Boa Viagem). It is the celebration of the Catholic guarding saint of the seamen and one of the most crowded events in the village. This year was no exception.
Between 13 and 18 of August, Ericeira’s main square dressed up with gleaming ornaments, confectionary trucks, regional products fairs, corteges and popular music evoking a typical celebration among the sea’s people. And as we are used to in these events, there was a display of fireworks, which gathered thousands of visitors and residents of the village in praia dos Pescadores.
As Ericeira’s livelihood is shifting with all the tourism and new residents, the traditional celebrations still remain as an important symbol of its identity and culture, which must continue untouchable for the sake of the historic memory of the village.
Here are sixteen exquisite moments of this year’s celebrations, which blended Portuguese and foreigners in a unique festivity.
