October 14, 2011 – a date that goes down in history for the consecration of Ericeira as a World Surfing Reserve, the second one in the world and the only one on the European continent, back then.
In twenty photographs, we return to a journey full of symbolism, along which dreams spoke louder than fears and where speeches heralded a new era for the preservation and promotion of the award-winning waves and their surrounding ecosystems.
In these images, there are many faces (one of them, now departed, is that of Henrique ‘Gramanha’, the representative of Ericeira fishing community chosen to speak a few words to the surfers and others present during the consecration ceremony) that are part of the local and international wave culture, among more or less known and anonymous individuals who enjoy this unique heritage on a daily basis.
