Several participants of the 1st National Surfing Championship, held on May 22, 1977, recently returned to Ribeira d’Ilhas. To mark the 40th anniversary was unveiled a commemorative plaque that honors not only this historic moment as the pioneers of Portuguese surf. Among the present names such as João Moraes Rocha – winner of the ’77 competition –, Fernando Martins Shorty, João Inocentes, Antero Santos (1st President of FPS – Portuguese Surf Federation), Paulo Machado, Carlos Vieira, Miguel Aragão, Pêpê Carrasco, Pedro Machado da Costa, Paulo Belo, Paulinho do Baleal, José Cotta or several members of AHMS – Surf Museum were also there.

And the celebrations didn’t stop here: a wreath was placed on the outside in loving memory of the surfers who’re now gone, followed by an Expression Session where these “illustrious guests” approached the waves with great joy and revivalism. The conviviality would continue over dinner, held at Café Vitória, an truly place of worship in Ribamar.

Commemorative trophies, t-shirts with the original design of ’77 and several prizes from the Expression Session were also distributed, in which were distinguished Teresa Ayala (the Best Maneuver), João Inocentes (the Longest Wave) and Tó Herdade – the Biggest Wipeout. João Boavida and Pedro Santos took home the prize for the Best Shared Wave, a beautiful metaphor for the old school spirit that should be reborn in each wave runner.
