Tapada Nacional de Mafra will be subject to a forest conversion with the support of the Rural Development Program 2020 (RDP 2020) and the Environmental Fund.

The description states that this is a “project related to actions to improve the resilience and environmental value of forests, and their adaptation to climate change, with two components/goals:

  • The first goal of this project is to promote the conversion of a eucalyptus plantation, in an area of around 34.4 ha, to stone pine (Pinus pinea) and strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo), the latter of which will occupy around 10% of the total area.

The second goal is to improve areas of stone pine forest, in about 15 ha, installed after the 2003 wildfire, as a way of eliminating competition with spontaneous vegetation and between trees, and promoting the improvement of their development conditions.

  • This second project concerns afforestation with indigenous species from areas susceptible to desertification, in a total of 18.6 hectares, which has as its main objective the afforestation of areas of Tapada de Mafra that are essentially occupied by tall bushes, with stone pine (12,6 ha) and strawberry tree (6 ha).”

It is foreseen that, in this way, in a period of 8 to 10 years, Tapada de Mafra will have “pine nuts and arbutus that will allow to improve its biodiversity and will function in addition as a source of food for all the fauna”.
