São Lourenço Beach has been awarded the 1st Prize on the “Most Accessible Beach 2025” [“Praia + Acessível 2025”] award in the category of Coastal Beaches, consolidating this seaside area—part of the Ericeira World Surfing Reserve—as a national example that the beach and the sea should be a right for everyone.
The ceremony, part of the BTL – Lisbon Travel Market, and organized by the National Institute for Rehabilitation (INR, I.P.), the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA), and Turismo de Portugal, celebrated bathing areas that raise the bar in implementing best practices in accessibility and equal opportunities for people with reduced mobility.
São Lourenço Beach puts Mafra in the spotlight on the inclusive tourism map
The award was presented to the Mayor of Mafra, Hugo Moreira Luís, in a ceremony attended by the Chair of the INR Board, Sónia Esperto; the President of the APA, Pimenta Machado; the Vice-President of Turismo de Portugal, Teresa Monteiro; and the representative of IACESS, Helena Vitorino.
With this distinction, São Lourenço places Mafra in a prominent position within the inclusive tourism circuit. In the inland beach category, the first prize was awarded to Fraga da Pegada Beach, in Macedo de Cavaleiros.
The event, which also featured a speech by Carla Salsinha, President of the Regional Tourism Entity of the Lisbon Region, served as a launch pad for the 2026 edition of the “Accessible Beach – Beach for All!” program.
