Municipality of Mafra maintains Blue Flag beaches

Recently, a press conference was held at the Vasco da Gama Aquarium in Algés, where the beaches, marinas, and ecotourism boats awarded the Blue Flag for the 2024 bathing season in Portugal were announced. In the municipality of Mafra, as in the previous year, the six beaches with this distinction remain unchanged.

With the bathing season in Mafra starting on June 15 (and continuing until September 15), the six beaches that will be able to raise the Blue Flag are as follows:

  • Foz do Lizandro – Mar (Sea)
  • Baleia, or Praia do Sul
  • Algodio, or Praia do Norte
  • Ribeira d’Ilhas
  • São Lourenço
  • Porto da Calada (Calada’s Port)

Each of these beaches, located in the parishes of Carvoeira, Ericeira, Santo Isidoro and Encarnação, offer visitors a unique experience, combining natural beauty with quality infrastructures and exemplary environmental management practices.

For the 2024 season a total of 398 beaches, 19 marinas and 23 ecotourism boats will have the Blue Flag in Portugal during the bathing season. This number represents a significant increase compared to the previous year, with four more beaches, two more marinas and two more ecotourism boats receiving this distinction.

Out of a total of 75 beaches awarded the Blue Flag in the Águas do Tejo Atlântico (Waters of Atlantic Tagus) area, 61 are coastal and 14 are inland or river beaches.

The official ceremony for raising the first Blue Flag will take place at Porto de Recreio da Calheta on May 31 for marinas; followed by Praia da Fontinha, in Porto Santo, on June 1 for coastal beaches; and finally, the Blue Flag will be raised for inland or river beaches at Praia Fluvial do Agroal, in Ourém, on June 7.

For this Summer, 204 Environmental Education activities are scheduled, with 10 blue centers distributed across various regions: Lourinhã (2), Torres Vedras (2), Nazaré, Mafra, Cascais, Caldas da Rainha and Oeiras – 2.
