“Free man, you will always cherish the sea!”
Charles Baudelaire
“Are you going to the Ribas?
I’ve been checking the sea
Are you coming from the South, my old?
I’m going to the North.”
(“Vais às Ribas?
Fui ber o mar.
Vens do Sul, ‘nha belha?
Vou lá ao Norte.”)
The technical and affectionate vocabulary, where the sea is always new, a pilgrimage of the eyes, an altar, a source of answers or a bed of thoughts.
The “Ribas Wall” or People’s Assembly, as it is known, is the center of this ritual, renewing itself everyday with each turn of the tide.
