Last month, at the Docas de Alcântara – in Lisbon – took place the Commemorative Ceremony of the 35th anniversary of Bandeira Azul (Blue Flag), in which the municipality of Mafra (along with other municipalities) received the International Participation certification in the Blue Flag Program.
Mafra municipality has participated in this European program since 2000, and this year, at the beginning of the bathing season – on June 12 2021 –, six beaches in the Municipality of Mafra were once again awarded the Blue Flag: Porto da Calada, São Lourenço, Ribeira d’Ilhas, Algodio (or Praia do Norte), Baleia (or Praia do Sul) and Foz do Lizandro-Mar.
a program that promotes education for sustainable development
The Blue Flag Program is an educational program for sustainable development, promoted in Portugal by the European Blue Flag Association, the Portuguese section of the Foundation for Environmental Education.
“Over 35 years, the Blue Flag has helped educate for sustainable development in coastal, river and lake beaches, recreational ports and marinas, and recreational and ecotourism vessels through a set of criteria related to Information and Environmental Education, Quality of Bathing Water, Environmental Management, Safety and Services, Social Responsibility, Community Involvement and Ecosystem Protection”, according to the European Blue Flag Association.
