Ericeira has won an award that reaffirms its status as an excellent tourist destination. The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), a specialized agency of the United Nations, awarded Ericeira the title of “Best Tourism Village 2023.”
Manteigas (a village and municipality in Serra da Estrela, in the Guarda district), Sortelha – an Historic Village in the municipality of Sabugal, also in Guarda – and Madalena, on the Azorean island of Pico, were the other Portuguese destinations honored. There were 260 locations that applied, and the UNWTO approved only 54.
Ericeira’s delegation honored one of the village’s centuries-old traditions by wearing traditional fishermen’s attire
This award is restricted to tourism destinations with a population of up to 15.000 inhabitants located in landscapes with a significant presence of traditional activities and shared values and lifestyles of the community.
The official award ceremony took place during the 25th session of the UNWTO General Assembly, held in Uzbekistan. The application submitted by the Portuguese coastal town impressed the UNWTO’s Independent Advisory Council with a set of indicators in nine areas related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The indicators assessed in Ericeira’s application cover nine key areas related to different SDGs, such as the preservation of cultural and natural resources, economic, social and environmental sustainability, tourism development, governance, infrastructure, health, safety and protection.
At the award ceremony for “Best Tourism Village 2023” in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, the Ericeira delegation was represented by the Mayor of Mafra Municipal Council, Hélder Sousa Silva, the Councilor for Tourism, Pedro Carmo Silva and the President of the Ericeira Parish Council, Filipe Abreu. The three honored one of the village’s centuries-old traditions by wearing traditional fishermen’s attire. The Secretary of State for Tourism, Commerce, and Services, Nuno Fazenda, represented the Portuguese government at the event.
