Recently, Arte Sonora (a music magazine) published an article entitled “Portuguese Drummers You Should Know”, in which Maria Campos, born in Ericeira, is featured.
This drummer from the fishing village was born in 1993 and began her studies in rhythmic instruments in 2002, having started playing with several orchestras and philharmonic groups in the Ericeira and Mafra area, and also with musical projects such as “7 Saias” and “Zé of Pipo”. At the moment, Maria Campos invests more time in a duo project called Xodó – Brazilian popular music –, which is dedicated to a songbook of names such as Chico Buarque, Vinicius de Moraes, Tom Jobim or João Gilberto.
Maria Campos started playing with several orchestras and philharmonic groups in the Ericeira and Mafra area.
The article begins by mentioning that the first female drummer appeared in the 19th century, but that it took until 1920 to discover the first one to embark on a professional career – the North American Viola Smith –, as the musical community of this instrument was always dominated by men, both internationally and nationally.
However, the scenario has been changing globally and in Portugal and it is already slightly different. It’s true that there aren’t that many active female drummers on the market yet, but the ones that do exist prove that any prejudice is unfounded.
In the world of drums and percussion, from rock to jazz, from funk to pop, Susie Filipe, Sónia “Little B” Cabrita, Inês Lobo, Carolina Brandão, Helena Fagundes, Júlia Reis, Joana Batista, Helena Peixoto and Catarina “Katari” da Silva Henriques appear side by side with Ericeira’s Maria Campos.
