From conspiracy theorists and life crises to death sentences and a zen toilet cleaner, CineMafra offers a diverse selection of movies in May. They will be shown at the Auditório Municipal Beatriz Costa in Mafra starting today, May 4th, always at 9:30 pm. The four selected films have all been featured at the Cannes and Venice Film Festivals.
The first film on May 4th is “Bugonia“ (2025), a dark science fiction comedy that premiered in Venice. Lead actress Emma Stone plays the CEO of a multinational corporation. She is kidnapped by conspiracy theorists who believe the planet is being invaded by a dangerous alien race. Hidden away in a remote cabin, the situation is slowly spiraling out of control.
On Monday, May 11th, “The Worst Person in the World” (2021) will be screened. The film earned Renate Reinsve the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival. She plays 30-year-old Julie, who doesn’t know what she wants from life. Her older boyfriend wants to start a family with her, but she doesn’t feel ready and embarks on a journey of self-discovery.
The black-and-white drama “The Stranger” by acclaimed French director François Ozon will screen on May 18. It is inspired by one of Albert Camus’ most famous novels from 1942. Meursault, a Frenchman living in colonial Algeria in the 1930s, leads a life of indifference and apathy. He finds himself involved in a dispute that results in the death of an Arab whom he encounters on a beach. Throughout the entire court process, his inability to show feelings — whether sorrow at the death of his mother, affection for his girlfriend, or remorse for the crime he committed —becomes the main reason for his sentence to death.
To conclude the month, on May 25th, the German-French movie “Perfect Days” (2023), filmed in Tokyo by Wim Wenders, will be shown. It’s about Hirayama, a contented man who works as a toilet cleaner. He lives a routine life and has a passion for music, literature, and photography. Throughout the film, he has various encounters with people close to him, and his past is gradually revealed.
