The Orlando Morais Municipal Gallery (located in the Jaime Lobo e Silva Cultural Center), in Ericeira, hosted the opening of the exhibition “Óscar Cardoso, in the Evolution of the Portuguese Guitar”, on March 22.
This exhibition, open to the public until June 1, offers an immersive journey through the life and work of this remarkable luthier, who was interviewed in the second print edition of AZUL – Ericeira Mag.

The exhibition presents a journey through Óscar Cardoso’s career, highlighting his influence on the evolution of the Portuguese guitar. Renowned for his talent and innovation in the design and construction of this instrument, he has already established a significant legacy in the musical landscape.
Óscar Manuel Barbedo Cardoso, born in 1960, has dedicated 35 years to the restoration and construction of string instruments. Influenced by his father, instrument maker Manuel Cardoso, he started early in the family workshop.
From childhood, he showed interest in the art of luthiery, beginning with small tasks and gradually developing an innovative approach. With creativity and experience, he introduced new materials and processes, earning recognition for his craft. His father’s support was crucial in solidifying his talent as a “guitarreiro”, making him a key figure in instrument craftsmanship.
