The world of surfing is full of inspiring stories and dedicated athletes who constantly face challenges to improve their technique and tackle the waves, always looking for the next obstacle to overcome. Gony Zubizarreta granted an interview to Deeply, a brand that sponsors him, in which he shares some insights about preparing for the winter season and some planned trips.
When asked about his preparation for the winter season, the Galician athlete, who has been residing in Ericeira for several years, revealed that he aims to “maintain the rhythm during summertime and, when winter comes, be ready for solid waves at home (…) training in the gym with Ruben Francisco has been a great help lately, especially while recovering from a shoulder and knee injury.”

Regarding the planned trips that excite him the most, Gony stated that he is “super excited about a trip to California” during which he will visit some old friends and surf a bit.
The athlete is an advocate for sustainability and the environment. When asked about his involvement in any programs in these areas, Gony highlighted the Wasted Shoes project, “a Spanish brand that produces vegan shoes, all made in Spain and Portugal with natural materials. I also collaborate with WE Sustainability whenever I can, participating in beach cleanups in Galicia.”
As the interview concludes, a question that couldn’t be left unasked arises. Regarding his favorite waves in Europe during the winter, Gony Zubizarreta has a ready answer: “my favorite wave is Pico de Patos and some other hidden waves in Ericeira and the Algarve.”
