World-class surf coach, photo journalist and grandfather. José Maria Pyrrait has achieved a lot in his life. Now he’s taking on a new challenge. Above all, to demonstrate that his age is not limiting him.
On a Stand Up Paddle, the sixty-year-old wants to row along the 900 kilometers of the Portuguese coast. To promote an active and healthy lifestyle, he wants to cover 30 kilometers per day starting at the Minho River and ending at the Guadiana River.
the crossing isn’t only a physical challenge
Pyrrait started surfing as a child and gained a deep connection to the sea. SUP came into his life as a natural extension of his passion for the sea. Long ocean crossings became a regular habit.
In the last year, he already completed a distance of 130 kilometers, rowing from Ribeira d’Ilhas to Carvalhal in just four days. Now, José sets new goals. To cross the whole Portuguese coast in thirty days started as a vague idea but quickly emerged into a dream and a clear goal.
June 22nd marks the possible starting point. Pyrrait will then open a waiting period, allowing the adventure to begin whenever a favorable forecast appears in the weeks that follow.
At 58, José got diagnosed with diabetes. Contrary to expectations, this gave him even more motivation to improve his lifestyle and transform it into strength to overcome barriers. The crossing is not only a physical challenge to José but a celebration of the beauty, diversity and fragility of the Portuguese coast.
His journey will be captured day by day through photos and videos, shared across social media, and ultimately brought together in a final documentary. Alongside the project, Pyrrait organizes free surf and SUP lessons for children and adults who don’t have access to the sea.
José Maria Pyrrait wants to inspire others, challenge age-related prejudices and encourage a healthy lifestyle. The crossing is his human legacy and promotes active longevity through energy, discipline and passion for sports.
