World Carillon Congress: music, discovery, and exchange

The World Carillon Congress will take place in Mafra from June 24 to 28. The venue will be the Mafra’s UNESCO World Heritage Site, the National Palace of Mafra, as it houses one of the world’s largest historic carillons.

The event is organized by the Municipality of Mafra, the World Carillon Federation (WCF), and the National Palace of Mafra, under the purview of Museums and Monuments of Portugal, with artistic direction by carillonist Abel Chaves.

The theme of the congress is “Automatic Music and other non-performance aspects of the Carillon”, focusing on the musical process that inspired the modern carillon. The program features thematic presentations, debates, workshops, specialized tours and concerts.

Carillonists, composers, bell founders, maintenance companies, researchers, and other musicians as well as international institutions devoted to the teaching and dissemination of the instrument will be present.

The registration fee for the congress, which includes access to all sessions, congress materials, meals (except during the Lisbon Day), and all scheduled social events, is 450 euros. Registration is available online and offers discounts for those under 25.
