It is during the cold season that Portugal’s coastal line grows into one of the most sought out wave riding destinations in the world. And when every element (wind, swell, and wave direction) aligns in perfection, Ericeira becomes the sort of aquatic and adrenaline hotbed that we honour in this gallery.
Surfers and bodyboarders roamed the village as the swell predictions foresaw epic sessions in pretty much every spot in town. Secrets were seen with only a few souls abound. Ribeira d’Ilhas sheltered countless waves’ explorers. The touristic surf spots were often visited by locals and waves’ lovers from abroad. Praia dos Pescadores remerged as an alternative on stormy days. And lest we forget competitions such as the World Junior Championship and Allianz Ericeira Pro by Dakine. Or the endless search for perfect barrels and oh-so-awesome tricks and the dramatic tales (like Tiago Pires’ injury at Cave) and, among all this, the enduring joys.
