Proposed Marine Protected Area in Mafra, Sintra and Cascais goes forward

The municipalities of Mafra, Cascais and Sintra recently proposed the creation of a Marine Protected Area in the sea of ​​these three locations, which could be ready within 12 to 18 months.

As explained by Emanuel Gonçalves, scientific director of an expedition in the region that ended last week, the creation of a Community Initiative Protected Marine Area (AMPIC) is a proposal by the three municipalities that, with the support of Oceano Azul Foundation and several institutions, has now taken its first step, precisely through this expedition.

Aboard the sailboat Santa Maria Manuela, a former codfishing boat belonging to Jerónimo Martins business group, and with the support of other small boats, including fishing boats, a team of 150 people, including many scientists, carried out this expedition to discover the sea in the region.

Emanuel Gonçalves led the 12 days of the expedition and now said that the respective scientific report should be ready by the end of this year, containing a set of scientific recommendations to support another participatory process, which will begin to be structured by the three municipalities.

Continuity studies are also planned “so that within a year, a year and a half, there is a proposal to be delivered to the Government, already with all the necessary elements for the creation of a Marine Protected Area”, explained the official.
