In June, CineMafra travels from Italy and Spain, through Iran and Egypt, all the way into space. The Auditório Municipal Beatriz Costa, in Mafra, will present five movies always at 9:30 p.m., offering audiences an escape from the ordinary.

The opening movie is “Super Mario Galaxy – The Movie” on June 1st, celebrating International Children’s Day. The film, which was released earlier this year, follows Mario and his friends as they travel into space, far away from the Mushroom Kingdom. He explores the cosmic world and must face galactic challenges!

On June 8, the journey continues to Italy and a drama about grief and regret. The film “La Grazia” tells the fictional story of the Italian president, who faces a law on euthanasia and two requests for presidential pardons. At the same time, the lonely widower, nearing the end of his term in office, is also confronted with difficult decisions in his private life. This was the opening movie for the Venice Film Festival 2025 and was directed by Paolo Sorrentino.

The following Monday, the 15th, CineMafra will show a dark comedy titled “Divine Comedy” about an Iranian director renowned for his work but censored by the government. None of his works have been authorized for screening. Together with his determined producer, he attempts to make his film available to audiences through unofficial channels. In the process, he must navigate bureaucratic obstacles while also balancing his love for art with concerns for his own safety.

The political thriller “Eagles Of The Republic” will screen on June 22nd. In this film, George Fahmy, Egypt’s most famous actor, suddenly falls into disgrace with the authorities. In order to save his career, he agrees to take part in a propaganda film about Egypt’s current president, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. Despite his own beliefs and driven by concern for the safety of his family, he becomes increasingly drawn into the project and the authoritarian regime behind it. The drama was selected to compete for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.

The final film of the month, “Sundays”, on June 29, follows 17-year-old Ainara, who lives in Bilbao, Spain, with her father and two younger sisters. While her family expects her to start university, Ainara feels a strong calling to dedicate her life to God. When she tells her family that she wants to become a nun, they react with shock, putting the family’s balance to the test. This family drama competed at the San Sebastián Film Festival, where it was awarded the Golden Shell as well as the FIPRESCI, SIGNIS, Irizar, and Feroz Zinemaldia prizes. At the 2026 Goya Awards, it won Best Film, Best Director, Best Actress (Patricia López Arnaiz), Best Supporting Actress (Nagore Aranburu), and Best Original Screenplay.
