At 60 years old and living with type 2 diabetes, the world-class surf coach is determined to show that nothing can stop him. Overall, Pyrrait will spend 7 to 10 hours on the water per day. He will take snacks with him on the board to help regulate his blood sugar levels. In this interview with AZUL – Ericeira Mag, José Pyrrait speaks about the journey that led him to this project and shares his thoughts ahead of the adventure.

How did you get into surfing?

I’ve always had a really good connection with the ocean. When I was nine years old, my family moved to Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil. I arrived in Rio on the 22nd of December and on Christmas my uncle gave me a small board. I started to use it on the same day and in (the following) August I bought my first surfboard. I began surfing and I never stopped.

Why did you move to Ericeira and stay?

In 1982, I started coming to Ericeira to surf. The waves here are amazing. I started to work as a photographer in journalism and went to Angola to cover the civil war. I then moved to the Azores and stayed there for six years, got married and had my youngest son. I have two sons from my first marriage, so we decided to go back to mainland Portugal for my sons to grow up together. I always said, if I got back to the mainland, I can only imagine living in Ericeira.

I train my mind to keep going when I feel tired

How did stand-up paddle enter your life?

Around 20 years ago, the guys from Semente, Nick Uricchio and Miguel Katzenstein, started making stand-up paddle boards. The guys gave me one to try and I started enjoying it. For the physical condition it’s really good, it’s a really complex exercise. It’s a different way of surfing. You are alone with yourself, watch the ocean, everything is white. It’s amazing. You can catch a lot of speed and surf the open water waves. Before I discovered the stand-up paddle, I never surfed on windy days. It’s a different way to keep moving in the ocean.

Why did you come up with the idea of crossing the whole Portuguese coast?

I like the challenge. I think it’s really important to go out of my comfort zone. I’ve spent my whole life stepping out of it because that’s how to make your comfort zone bigger. And I love my country. I love Portugal. I love the coast of Portugal and I think it can be really interesting.

How are you getting prepared?

I’ve been preparing my whole life. I started with martial arts when I was five years old. I have good military training and I’ve always had strong discipline. I train every day. I wake up, do a bit of exercise, and surf whenever I can. So, I believe you don’t need to have a specific preparation. All your life, you need to be prepared for everything. And your mind is a really important thing. You can have the best preparation in the world, but if your mind is weak, you’ll never achieve anything. I train my mind to keep going when I feel tired.

What will be more difficult: the physical or the mental strain?

It’s really a balance between body and mind. Because I know my body will feel very weak at some point. And sometimes your mind is your friend, but other times it’s your enemy. It will start to say “Please, quit. You can give up now. Go and relax. Go back to your family, back to your comfort zone. Eat a big steak.” Sometimes in the middle of the ocean, I talk to myself and I say: “Shut up, man. I don’t want to listen to your bullshit.” So, your mind and your body have a strong connection. As the Greeks say: strong body, strong mind.

What do you think about while you’re alone on the water for that long?

I think the time you pass alone is really important. I love this. When I paddle, I’m focused on the ocean. Sometimes I’m scared because I’m going really far out. But when I start to feel fear, I change my mindset. Because what are you really afraid of? Afraid of dying? Why? Everybody’s going to die. So, sometimes I look around and think: “This is an amazing place to die.”

When will you eat? Where do you sleep?

I live day by day. For now, I’ll be sleeping in a caravan. But I am open to support from restaurants and beach bars.

if you fight the ocean, you lose

What does your family think about the project?

My wife has lived with me for 35 years. She knows me. Sometimes she doesn’t like my ideas very much, but she always respects them and gives me the support that I need. My sons always support me, my parents always think I’m crazy.

What sections of the route are the most challenging?

I think the most difficult areas are the capes. Cabo Mondego, Peniche, Cabo da Roca, Cabo Espichel, and Sagres. When you pass the cliffs, you can go really far away from land and there’s always backwash. When I feel tired it’s heavy. But even if the backwash pushes me too hard, or if a current takes me out, I’ll come back. If you fight the ocean, you lose.

What does the maritime culture in Portugal mean to you?

You have the surfing community, the fishermen, and the fishermen’s wives. But you also have many communities on the coast that are afraid of the ocean. There is a coastal community that doesn’t like the ocean. They grow up with strong respect and fear of the ocean I’m going to look for people from those communities because I think it’s a really interesting culture. I want to give them a voice too.

Free surf lessons for people who don’t have access to the sea are part of the project. Why?

Surfing is a really elite sport. It’s not for everybody. Only certain parts of society have that privilege. I want to work with a group of students who cannot afford the surf classes. One day I hope to help one of these kids to make a living from surfing and become a great champion.

What do you want people to learn while they follow your challenge?

Limits are there to be broken. Don’t believe it when people say something is not possible.

What are you looking forward to the most?

Everything. I want to start.
