{"id":51575,"date":"2022-11-10T00:01:46","date_gmt":"2022-11-10T00:01:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ericeiramag.pt\/?p=51575\/"},"modified":"2022-10-31T09:50:58","modified_gmt":"2022-10-31T09:50:58","slug":"proposed-marine-protected-area-in-mafra-sintra-and-cascais-goes-forward","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ericeiramag.pt\/en\/proposed-marine-protected-area-in-mafra-sintra-and-cascais-goes-forward\/","title":{"rendered":"Proposed Marine Protected Area in Mafra, Sintra and Cascais goes forward"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Photography:<\/strong> Pepe Gast\u00f3n \/ Diogo Portu<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The municipalities of Mafra, Cascais and Sintra recently proposed the creation of a Marine Protected Area in the sea of \u200b\u200bthese three locations, which could be ready within 12 to 18 months.<\/p>\n<p>As explained by Emanuel Gon\u00e7alves, scientific director of an expedition in the region that ended last week, the creation of a Community Initiative Protected Marine Area (AMPIC) is a proposal by the three municipalities that, with the support of Oceano Azul Foundation and several institutions, has now taken its first step, precisely through this expedition.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>in order to have more sustainable fishing, we must have more fish in the sea, and for that conservation measures serve to help that small-scale fishing can have a future<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Aboard the sailboat Santa Maria Manuela, a former codfishing boat belonging to Jer\u00f3nimo Martins business group, and with the support of other small boats, including fishing boats, a team of 150 people, including many scientists, carried out this expedition to discover the sea in the region.<\/p>\n<p>Emanuel Gon\u00e7alves led the 12 days of the expedition and now said that the respective scientific report should be ready by the end of this year, containing a set of scientific recommendations to support another participatory process, which will begin to be structured by the three municipalities.<\/p>\n<p>Continuity studies are also planned \u201cso that within a year, a year and a half, there is a proposal to be delivered to the Government, already with all the necessary elements for the creation of a Marine Protected Area\u201d, explained the official.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1061\" style=\"width: 2058px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ericeiramag.pt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/192520854_27d173bb98_o.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1061\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1061 colorbox-51575\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ericeiramag.pt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/192520854_27d173bb98_o.jpg\" alt=\"Praia dos Pescadores. - ph.
