In the two months after the Portuguese were allowed to walk free again, the Mafra National Palace was the cultural equipment under the supervision of the Directorate-General for Cultural Heritage that registered the largest number of visitors in Portugal.<\/p>\n

After the declaration of the State of Emergency, carried out in mid-March following the current pandemic of the new Coronavirus (which causes Covid-19 disease), monuments, museums and national palaces were closed as one of several preventive measures taken by the Government.<\/p>\n

Having been closed for about two months, these cultural facilities only opened doors again on May 18, 2020, being the period between this date and July 17 referred to the statistical data provided to AZUL<\/a> by the Press Office Directorate-General for Cultural Heritage – DGPC.<\/p>\n

Mafra National Palace received a total of 13,015 visitors between May 18 and July 17, 2020<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

During these two months, the National Palace of Mafra received a total of 13,015 visitors, which corresponds to 13.7 percent of the total visits to DGPC cultural facilities in the same period, which was 95,044 visitors. Among the cultural facilities under the tutelage of the DGPC are, for example, Jer\u00f3nimos Monastery, Bel\u00e9m Tower, the National Coach (carriage) Museum, the Ajuda National Palace and Alcoba\u00e7a and Batalha monasteries.<\/p>\n

The evolution of the number of visitors to Mafra National Palace for this period was as follows:<\/p>\n

May 18-31: 1,400 visitors
\nJune 1-17: 4,574 visitors
\nJune 18-30: 2,345 visitors
\nJuly 1-17: 4,696 visitors<\/p>\n

one of the factors that helps explain this ranking leadership will be the fact that people consider the visit safe<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Contacted for this purpose by AZUL, the Director of Mafra National Palace, Dr. M\u00e1rio Pereira, said that one of the factors that helps explain this \u201cranking leadership\u201d will be the fact that people consider safe to visit the National Palace of Mafra, even for the grandeur of the space and its architecture. At this stage, visits to the space are practically integral<\/a>, with a bypass so that people do not cross each other inside the monument.<\/p>\n

The Mafra Royal Building (which includes the Palace, Basilica, Convent, Tapada and Jardim do Cerco) has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list for about a year.<\/p>\n
