Fishing is one of the economic activities that most helped to shape the Portuguese coast and Ericeira, in particular, over the centuries.<\/p>\n

The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation Art Library holds a collection of photographs that represents an authentic treasure of the last century, very present in the identity of this fishing village: portraits of the fifties, with men and women from Ericeira (but also from Nazar\u00e9 and Lisbon), where it is possible to see the old fishing boats pulled from the sea by oxen, as well as the daily life of fishermen, dressed in traditional checkered shirts and tucked pants.<\/p>\n

\"Fishing<\/a><\/p>\n

The representative images of Ericeira are naturally designated by the everyday life at Ribeira Beach (pt: Praia da Ribeira) – or Praia dos Pescadores \u2013, currently Ericeira’s Fishing Port: ramp, sailing boats, oxen, sea, fishermen and their crafts, the giant wall in a cliff and houses become eternalised in black and white, in a precious and timeless testimony.<\/p>\n

These photos from the Gulbenkian Art Library were recently published by Mashable.com<\/a>. In the article entitled “c. 1950 – Fishing in Portugal. A vanished way of life on the Iberian coast” you can see all the images, which follow the fishermen’s day by day.<\/p>\n
