In Ericeira we find O Gafanhoto. A simple, yet cozy, restaurant offering mouth-watering traditional cuisine. Its customers can enjoy well-prepared dishes in generous portions.
With about 60 seats inside and 20 outside, O Gafanhoto is an old establishment that started as a tavern in 1968, “baptized” with the founder’s nickname. Now in its third generation, the restaurant continues to serve the best of Portuguese cuisine with warmth and dedication. There’s no rush to savor grilled roe, squid curry or grilled skate.
One of the most appreciated dishes is Cozido à Portuguesa (Portuguese Stew), which on Sundays faces a rival: roasted goat. During the week, grilled fish – sea bass or sea bream – is a frequent option, along with sardines. For meat lovers, the rabbit rice, rabbit hunter style, and Carne de Porco à Alentejana (Pork with Clams) are noteworthy. Upon request, they offer a traditional Ericeira fish stew, called Caldeirada, a delicacy made with skate, conger eel, and monkfish, as well as another favorite: codfish tongues rice. The wine cellar is carefully selected, and the house wine is equally commendable.
