Taking as starting point the EDP Billabong Pro Ericeira that took place at the end of September, we stepped back in time to one of the first international surfing events held in Ericeira.
The first ASP championship (predecessor of the current World Surf League), which was also the first to take place in Ericeira, now part of the World Surfing Reserve, until the present date was disputed in the late 80s: the 1989 Buondi Pro Instinct crowned Australians Rob Bain and Pam Burridge as champions. And in the following year the Buondi Pro had the same female winner, Pam Burrdge, while the icon Tom Curren would take the masculine title to the USA.
It is from this second championship that we present a true historical memory: the stage was a very different Ribeira d’Ilhas beach although the essential (the waves, of course) continue to roll with the same consistency after almost thirty years.
