Lisbon’s best Portuguese custard tart is produced in Ericeira

The prize for best Portuguese custard tart of 2017 in the entire District of Lisbon goes to the pastry shop “O Pãozinho das Marias”, in Ericeira. The winner of the contest organized by Peixe em Lisboa (Fish in Lisbon) gastronomic festival was revealed last Wednesday.

“We had already participated in this event last year, as suggested by some clients. We thought the house already had a good name and that that wasn’t necessary, but this contest actually gives a great visibility”, said Francisco Duarte, managing partner and pastry chef of O Pãozinho das Marias, to Portuguese magazine Visão. Each winning piece of pastry costs €1,10.

“Our Portuguese custard tarts are made according to a classic recipe that we try to perfect to its utmost. The puff pastry is crunchy and the filling very creamy, with a touch of lemon”, Francisco told the website. “It’s a seasonal zone, but on sunny weekends and good weather we sell about 300 to 400 Portuguese custard tarts a day”, says the young confectioner who’s been making, for over 5 years, all the cakes and breads that can be bought in this family business with two shops in Ericeira, one overlooking Algodio beach, the other located in Praça da República or “Jogo da Bola”, in the heart of the village.

The Best Portuguese Custard Tart Contest was first held nine years ago and remains to this day.
