Between September 24 and 30 Ericeira will host an event of the World Surf League (WSL) qualifying circuit.
The EDP Billabong Pro Ericeira, a maximum qualification (10,000 points) event of the Qualifying Series (QS) is expected to have the participation of about 80% of the athletes of the world circuit (CT) and will be for many of the world’s top surfers, like Frederico ‘Kikas’ Morais, the beginning of the European leg, before France (Hossegor, 3 to 14 October) and Portugal (Peniche, 16 to 27 October), of the main world surfing circuit.
This event, which will replace the Cascais event in the WSL schedule and will be based in Ribeira d’Ilhas, the so-called “visitors’ room” of the only European World Surfing Reserve, is aimed at promoting environmental sustainability. In order to minimize its impact on nature, the organization is committed to making it a green event – besides the non-use of fossil fuels, it is also aimed at being plastic free.
The return of an event of this importance to Ericeira, seven years later, will be one of the first steps given jointly by the Mafra Municipality and Turismo de Portugal to re-introduce Ericeira in international competitive surfing.
