If for some people surfing is just a hobby, for others this practice is an authentic lifestyle that takes them to travel the five continents in search of the best waves. Flight Network, a Canadian travel agency, has put together a list of the 55 best surf destinations in the world and Ericeira is at the first half of this list of suggestions.
This fishing village has renewed the maritime tradition and marks the 12th place amongst a total of 55 surf spots from all over the world. Beaches such as Empa and Ribeira d’Ilhas or the magic bay of Coxos are eyecandy for surfers who come from all around “only” to catch some waves in the only World Surfing Reserve consecrated in Europe.
In addition to mentioning the beauty of this coastal village, the site refers to the best times of the year to surf in Ericeira, according to the individual level (beginner, intermediate or advanced), leaving some recommendations for local accommodations and surf schools as well.
On this list, with Lombok in Indonesia at the very top, there are other points of the Portuguese coast: the Azores (15th place), the north coast of the country (33rd place), Algarve (39th place) and Praia Grande in Sintra facing the 54th position.
The Ericeira World Surfing Reserve understands the area between the beaches of Empa and São Lourenço, in a coastal strip that gathers seven world-class waves (Pedra Branca, Reef, Ribeira d’Ilhas, Cave, Crazy Left, Coxos and São Lourenço) in only 4 km.
